Storing HolidayDecoration Tips
Planning, packing and tracking are thekeys to making sense of your seasonal decorations.
Here are a few tips for making sure each year feels easier than the last.

- Evaluate your decorations each year and keep only whatyou are really going to use.
- Start a decorating notebook with an inventorysheet for each holiday so you can keep track of what you have.
- Insteadof throwing away used gift wrapping and tissue paper, run it though a paper shredderand use the strips as a packing filler for putting away decorations or for shipping.
- Labelevery box with its contents and holiday. Color coding is helpful.
- Toprevent warping and preserve the color of candles, they should be stored flat,out of the light and in a cool area.
- Use skirt or pant hangers for yourtablecloths, place mats and napkins so they don't become creased.
- Considerlimiting yourself to one or two kinds of all-occasion gift wrap and one or twocolors of ribbons and bows that you can use all year.
- Secure opened rollsof wrapping paper by cutting a leg from a pair of panty hose and slipping it overthe tube.
- Dry outdoor wreaths or garland for at least 24 hours beforestoring to prevent mold or mildew.
- Cover indoor wreaths with plastic bagsthen hang them on the walls in a closet or attic placing one nail at the top andone just below the base so the wreath keeps its round shape.
- For specialcostumes, dry-clean them and keep them folded neatly in a sealed, acid-free containerso no moisture or moths get in.
- Use zippered garment bags to protect bulkyplastic figures, sleighs, reindeer and other large ornamentation.
- Whenpurchasing strings of lights, immediately label the plus with a number keyed towritten description of the number of bulbs, type, place of purchase or any otherinformation. Any damaged bulbs will be easier to replace.
- Take anempty coffee can, cut a slit in the plastic lid and place the receptacle end throughit. Wrap the string around the can. You can store extra bulbs andextension cords inside the the.
- Always store colored lights in a darkarea to keep the bulbs from fading.
