Tips for Car Owners:

Read the manual – Take timeto read your drivers' manual and become familiar with the manufacturersrecommendations.

Check the battery – If a batteryis older than four years, it may only work well in warm weather.

Don't get stranded – Alwayskeep your cell phone charged and carry a set of jumper cables or portablepower pack in case you are lost or stranded, however, you should notuse your cell phone while driving.

Check your antifreeze – Checkthe antifreeze levels on a weekly basis. If the level drops regularlyand there are no signs of an external leak, your engine has an internalleak that must be fixed to prevent major engine damage.

Save fuel – Avoid unnecessaryabrupt braking and speedups as it can increase fuel economy by up totwo miles per gallon.

Switch to synthetic oil –If you currently use conventional oil, switching to a synthetic oillike Mobil 1 will help your car operate more efficiently helping yourengine to run cleaner and prevent harmful sludge buildup and deposits.

Let it idle – Allow your engineto idle for a few seconds before driving in cold weather to ensure properengine oil flow and lubrication.

Check the air pressure – Checkand fill tires to manufacturer recommended pressure; low tire pressureincreases wear and fuel consumption. If a tire loses pressure regularly,it probably has a puncture or defective valve, which must be fixed.

Check the tread – When tiresbecome too worn or unevenly worn, it can signal a wheel alignment problemor worn front-end parts.

Flush brake fluid – The fluidin your car’s brakes attracts and absorbs moisture, which can leadto corrosion of your braking system. Anti-lock systems are particularlysensitive to corrosion. It is good practice to have your brake fluidflushed and changed every couple of years.

Tune it – Get a full enginetune up according to your owner’s manual.

Check coolant color – Checkthe color of your coolant. Discoloration means the inhibitor in yourcoolant is depleted and your engine and radiator are being corroded.

Unblock hoses – An overheatedengine may be the result of a blocked or pinched hose. Inspect themat every oil change.

See clearly – Check your windshieldwipers for cracks and tears and get them replaced annually.

Clean air filters – Checkyour air filter system every other oil change to ensure there are noleaks or damage.

Inspect belts – Get it donewith your oil change, because damaged belts can cause poor engine performanceor failure.

Realign suspension – A suspensionthat is not aligned properly can wear out new tires after only a fewthousand miles.

Look at lights – Make sureyour lights are clean and working, and keep some spare bulbs and fusesin the glove compartment.

Maintain power steering –Check the fluid once a month and, if it’s low, look for leaks inhoses.

Fix the brakes – Don’tpostpone needed brake work, it’s dangerous and can end up costingmore to overhaul the entire brake system.

Fix a flat – Always carrya tire repair kit with you to temporarily seal a flat tire so you canget to the closest repair facility.

Test shock absorbers – Checkfor working shocks by bouncing the vehicle up and down and steppingaway. If the vehicle doesn't’t stop bouncing your shocks couldbe worn or you may have a leak.

Lighten the load – Store onlynecessary items in the trunk to save on fuel.

Replace oil filter – Get itdone every time you change your oil.

Wax it – Givingyour vehicle a good wax job on a regular basis can protect your car’spaint from pollution and rust.

Check spark plugs – Worn sparkplugs waste fuel and increase exhaust emissions, so get them checkedand replace hem when needed.

Keep cool – Check your car'sair conditioning system every spring.

Monitor the catalytic converter -If you hear a whistling sound or smell rotten eggs upon shutdown, yourexhaust catalyst may be plugged. Driving with a plugged catalyst willhurt fuel economy, cause excessive oil consumption and harm the engine.

Check your transmission fluid -Check your transmission fluid monthly, following instructions in yourowner's manual. Top-up as required.
