Tips
- Don't set your standards too high. As a young person, you're oftento limited to retail jobs. If there are certain stores you're interestedin, don't be afraid to apply to one's you're not so keen on as well.Keep your options open.
- Before going on an interview, do a bit of research on the companyyou're applying to. Take a look at their official website, or anypamphlets they have in their store. Get a feel for their mission statement, and be aware of any community service they do.
- If you are applying for a job at a book store, know what your favoritebooks and authors are and why. If you are applying at a video store, know your favorite movies, etc.
- Include a typed resume with your application, even if they don'trequest one. Search the Internet for resume examples and use thoseas guides.
- Embellishing a bit on your resume is not a bad idea. Take a lookat the activities you've done in high school or with clubs, in churchgroups, etc. Decide how those relate to your job and include thatexperience on your resume.
- Males should wear slacks (black or tan is best) a long sleeve shirtand a tie on their interview.
Females should look professional as well. A skirt or slacks, witha dress shirt or blouse.- Before you go on the interview, write down all the questions youbelieve they may ask. Go through them and make sure you know how youwill answer them. Employees often ask about your ethics, as well ashow you have performed in various scenarios.
- If you are asked about your faults or weaknesses, always try topick one that can be seen in a positive light as well.
- Dress professionally even when you go to submit your application.
- When submitting an application, always ask for the manager. Tryto avoid dropping off an application with another associate. Thisis a great way to introduce yourself and express your interest inthe position.
- At the end of most interviews, the employer will ask if you haveany questions for them. Think of something you would like to ask inadvance. Asking about their experiences in the company, or what opportunitiesthe company has are always good.
- If you are given a group interview, don't be afraid to speak up.Be sure to be the first to speak either on the first or second question. You don't want to speak first after every question, but try not tobe last.
- When you are interviewed, keep your facial features as still aspossible and look the employer straight in the eye. Employers aretrained to spot liars, and certain eye, hand and facial movementsare cues for them.
- After an interview its always a good idea to follow up, especiallyif you haven't heard anything in a few days. Sending a thank you cardnever hurts.
- Adding a bit of humor to your answers is always good. Smiling, andbeing personable but not fake is extremely important. If the employersees you as someone who is pleasant to be around, that can often giveyou the edge over someone who is strictly professional.
- Printing your resume on colored paper can help it stand out to anemployer.
- Make sure to include all your contact information at the top ofyour resume; including your name, phone number, cell phone, and evene-mail address.
- When you put down your "objectives" on the application,or on the resume, never say "to make money". Instead, tellthem what you will gain from working at their company as well as whatyou will bring to their company.
- If you are asked to take an online or phone test, listen very carefullyto all of the questions.
- These tests are often similar to a psychological evaluation. Manytimes they will ask you the same questions, but from a different angle. You want to be truthful, and tell them what they want to hear. Butat the same time, don't make yourself look too perfect!
