Nematodes
- There is an old notion that planting marigolds among the rows ofvegetables in the garden will control insect pests. The idea is popularbecause the marigold, although quite attractive, has a rather unpleasantodor. They share this feature with other attractive flowering plantsincluding the geranium. However, not all varieties of marigolds areeffective in controlling nematodes and other pests. The French dwarfmarigold, scientifically known as Tagetes patula, seems to be themost effective of the many marigold species when it comes to controllingnematodes. A method which is more effective than planting the marigoldsinside the row of vegetables is to sow the marigold seeds rather thicklyover the garden. Let them grow for at least two months and then plowthem under. Their nematode controlling quality should remain in thesoil for the entire growing season if done in this manner
