A headhunter, or a Recruiter or an Executive search specialist,is not an employment
agent.He's a recruiter hired by companies to seek out candidates for high-levelpositions or specialized jobs.
He finds people through research, networking and discreet telephonecalls.

Finding a Headhunter
- Ask industry colleagues to recommend you to the headhunters theywork with.
- Call a headhunter directly (it's best to say who recommended him)but be sure you're clear about the kind of job you want and what youhave to offer.
- Join an industry association and get published in its magazine ornewsletter as headhunters often scan association directories and magazinesfor names.
- Send your chronological resume to headhunters specializing in yourfield.
Using a Headhunter
- Discuss your background and experience (do no misrepresent yourself)
- Ask for an evaluation.
- Question the headhunter in depth about any companies to which hesends you (also do your own research).
- Discuss your career goals and ask for feedback on your resume.
Unsolicited Calls from Headhunters
- Be suspicious if the headhunter will not give his name, his firm'sname, address or phone number.
- Check out the firm with your colleagues and look it up in a directoryof executive search firms.
- Be suspicious if the headhunter is vague concerning job informationor asks a lot about your present firm and little about you.
- Don't work with a headhunter who uses high-pressure sales tacticsor seems unresponsive to your needs.
