Electric Burn Tips
Electrical burns are a medical emergency. An electrical burnmay look minor on the
outside,but electricity can cause serious internal damage, including burns andheart rhythm disturbances.

PREVENTION
- Keep electrical cords out of the reach of small children and pets.
- Plug bare electrical sockets with plastic inserts.
- Have frayed power cords replaced.
- Unplug lamps before replacing a light bulb.
- Turn off the power at the circuit breaker when replacing bulbs inceiling or wall lights.
- Unplug all appliances when making repairs.
- During a lightning storm, take cover inside a car, large building,house or seek low ground.
- Do not stand under a tree during a lightning storm.
- Call your doctor for any electrical burns.
- If a person stops breathing, has no pulse or fell, Seek emergencyservices immediately.
Precautions and Treatment
- Do not approach victim until you are sure the surrounding areais safe.
- Disconnect the power source if possible.
- If you feel tingling in your lower body while approaching a victim,turn around and hop to a safe place.
- Do not move wires off the victim unless you are sure the power hasbeen disconnected.
- When safe to approach the victim, check is airway, breathing andcirculation.
- If necessary, begin rescue breathing and CPR.
- To prevent shock, raise the victim's legs 8 to 12 inches and keepthe victim warm.
- Cover burns with dry, sterile dressing.
