Spam is E-mail that is not requested. Also known as "unsolicitedcommercial e-mail" (UCE), "unsolicited bulk e-mail"(UBE), "gray mail" and just plain "junk mail,"
theterm is both a noun (the e-mail message) and a verb (to send it). Spamis used to advertise products or to broadcast some political or socialcommentary.
Like viruses, spam has become a scourge on the Internet as hundredsof millions of unwanted messages are transmitted daily to almost everye-mail recipient as well as to newsgroups. Unfortunately for users andfortunately for spammers, as an advertising medium, spam does produceresults. Even if only an infinitesimal number of users reply, it isstill cost effective since e-mail is a very inexpensive way to reachpeople.
Spam is common and often frustrating, it is a side effect of havingan e-mail. It is not possible to eliminate it completely but here wehave put up tips to combat it..

- Spammers use special programs that extract e-mail addresses fromWeb sites and Usenet postings. To avoid ending on a spammer's mailinglist when you post to a Web forum or a newsgroups, you can obscureyour e-mail address by inserting something obvious into it. If youre-mail address is e-mail@yahoo.com, modify it to read e-mail@yah[delete_this]oo.comor better still use it as e-mail at yahoo.com
- Never reply to spam messages, even when they entice you to replyto "remove" you from their mailing lists. Often the instructionsare either bogus, or a way to collect more addresses. Replying confirmsto the spammers that your e-mail address is active, and you may receiveeven more junk mail
- Remove your e-mail address from your website's pages and providea web based mail form instead. This way spammers can't send robotsto your page to harvest e-mail addresses and put them on their mailinglists.
- Don't Buy from Spammers - Spammers are in it for the money. Do notencourage them by purchasing from spammers.
- Don't Delete Spam Automatically - Make sure you get to see all themail you want. Spam filters are not perfect, so they may produce falsepositives and delete legitimate mail.
- Don't Reply to Spam on a Mailing List - You don't want to be a spammer,do you? Replying to spam that appears on a mailing list may make youlook like one, though.
- Don't Use Your Primary Email Address to Sign Up for Anything - Younever know what might happen to an e-mail address you use to signup for Web sites or newsletters. It might be passed on to spammers.
- Filter Spam Using ISP-Supplied Junk Mail Headers - Maybe your InternetService Provider runs a spam filter that changes messages subtly ifit believes they are junk.
- Ignore Delivery Failures of Messages You Did Not Send - If you wonderwhy you are getting delivery failures for messages you know you didnot send, the cause may be a worm or a spammer, and it's probablynot on your computer.
- Know the E-mail Address for Spam Complaints - Complain about spamto the right person.
- Mail not Addressed to You is Likely Spam - They didn't want to reachyou, anyway. Mail where you don't know the sender that which is notaddressed to you is likely spam.
- Make Sure Your ISP Doesn't Filter Your Newsletters as Spam - Ina laudable effort to curb down on spam, many Internet Service Providersare filtering junk mail before it can reach you, and sometimes catchgood mail, too. Talk to your ISP to make sure you're getting all yourfavorite newsletters without interruption.
- Messages Containing "One-Time Mailing" Are Spam
- Use a Good Anti-Spam Program - Achieve a near spam-free e-mail accountby employing one of the great anti-spam tools that filter junk mailusing all kinds of clever strategies.
- Watch Out for Those Checkboxes - Make sure you don't opt in fore-mails you don't want, and watch out for checkboxes when you submitany form on a Web site.
