Unfortunately, too often the power of Email Marketing goes to the heads of newbie Email marketers. And this is where the trouble begins and their business ends!

Tips for Email Marketing
- Personalize each and every Email. People are more likely to read (as opposed to delete) Email that addresses them personally.
- Holidays are often holidays from Email, too. That's why Email marketing during the holidays is often not very effective.
- Make sure recipients of your Email marketing message know what you expect them to do (and what they can expect in return).
- Use client experiences as examples. This helps your readers associate your company with a solution to a problem that they may also have, increasing the likelihood that you'll get the call.
- Stop referencing "the experts." It's fine to throw in a terrific quote here and there if you stumble upon one that really drives home the point you're trying to make. Summarizing or reporting on the work of somebody else in your field however, positions you as an observer rather than as an industry leader, and no matter how eloquently you explain someone else's ideas, you're still diminishing your position as expert.
- Congratulate your clients. Everybody wins when you mention work you've done for a client. Your client gets some free publicity and you get to remind your readers of the work you do. If you have a way to show the reader some aspect of the project (e.g. a link to a web site you designed; a free download of a white paper you wrote), all the better, since in the process of checking out something that could help their own business, your readers will get a first hand look at the work you do.
- Email marketing does not work as well for a one-time quick hit marketing strategy. Email allows you to build a regular, ongoing dialogue with your best clients and prospects. And that becomes self-selecting - those who most wish to do business with you will appreciate the regular communications. Those who do not can opt-out. It truly is a win-win.
- One of the real keys to success is how frequently (or not) you communicate.
- Email a "targeted" list of people who will be interested in your offer. Perhaps the most critical step in guaranteeing the success of your Email promotions is that you Email a targeted list of opt-in subscribers who have specifically requested to receive information on a particular topic from you. You'll be wasting your time and energy if you don't.
- Remember that your job is NOT to sell your product to everyone. Not everyone wants your product. Focus your energy on the people who do! Those who have opted-in to your mailing list, your customers and leads, and individuals who have requested information from your auto-responder are all excellent prospects!
- Write benefit-oriented subject lines. When doing Email promotions, your subject line can literally make or break your success -- a critical point that the majority of marketers miss. You will always be most successful if you write subject lines that state a clear benefit and tell the reader exactly how they are going to save money, save time, make their life easier, etc., by opening and reading your Email
- If you can state a benefit AND create curiosity so much the better!
- Make it easy to read! Did you know that how you format your Email can literally make or break the success of your Email campaign? It's true... If you make mistakes formatting your Email to your customers and subscribers, you risk looking unprofessional, destroying your credibility, and having your hard work tossed in the trash without ever being read! After all, why should readers take your offer seriously if you don't know how to format an Email correctly?
- Include an "About Us" section. - A two or three sentence summary of what you do, who you do it for, and what makes you different - at the end of the newsletter will help your readers connect the dots, and again, lead them to visualize working with you.
- Give your subscribers the opportunity to "opt-out" of your mailing list. At the end of all Email you send, it's extremely important that you give people the opportunity to opt-out (i.e., be removed from) of your Email database. This is really, really important!
- A professionally formatted and thoroughly tested Email makes you look like a credible business owner who takes what you do very seriously. It invites readers to examine your Email check out your offer... and seriously consider making a purchase.
All these Tips should help you in your Email Markeing Quest.
