Tons of teenagers and young adults are looking for jobs at the moment. Unfortunately, many are coming up empty handed. The hardest part about getting your first, and even your second job is lack of experience. Here are a few tips on how to get the edge over other young people competing for positions..

Don't set your standards too high. As a young person, you're often to limited to retail jobs. If there are certain stores you're interested in, don't be afraid to apply to one's you're not so keen on as well. Keep your options open.

Before going on an interview, do a bit of research on the company you're applying to. Take a look at their official website, or any pamphlets they have in their store. Get a feel for their mission statement, and be aware of any community service they do.

If you are applying for a job at a book store, know what your favorite books and authors are and why. If you are applying at a video store, know your favorite movies, etc.

Include a typed resume with your application, even if they don't request one. Search the Internet for resume examples and use those as guides.

Embellishing a bit on your resume is not a bad idea. Take a look at the activities you've done in high school or with clubs, in church groups, etc. Decide how those relate to your job and include that experience on your resume.

Males should wear slacks (black or tan is best) a long sleeve shirt and a tie on their interview.
Females should look professional as well. A skirt or slacks, with a dress shirt or blouse.

Before you go on the interview, write down all the questions you believe they may ask. Go through them and make sure you know how you will answer them. Employees often ask about your ethics, as well as how you have performed in various scenarios.

If you are asked about your faults or weaknesses, always try to pick one that can be seen in a positive light as well.

Dress professionally even when you go to submit your application.

When submitting an application, always ask for the manager. Try to avoid dropping off an application with another associate. This is a great way to introduce yourself and express your interest in the position.

At the end of most interviews, the employer will ask if you have any questions for them. Think of something you would like to ask in advance. Asking about their experiences in the company, or what opportunities the company has are always good.

If you are given a group interview, don't be afraid to speak up. Be sure to be the first to speak either on the first or second question. You don't want to speak first after every question, but try not to be last.

When you are interviewed, keep your facial features as still as possible and look the employer straight in the eye. Employers are trained to spot liars, and certain eye, hand and facial movements are cues for them.

After an interview its always a good idea to follow up, especially if you haven't heard anything in a few days. Sending a thank you card never hurts.

Adding a bit of humor to your answers is always good. Smiling, and being personable but not fake is extremely important. If the employer sees you as someone who is pleasant to be around, that can often give you the edge over someone who is strictly professional.

Printing your resume on colored paper can help it stand out to an employer.

Make sure to include all your contact information at the top of your resume; including your name, phone number, cell phone, and even e-mail address.

When you put down your "objectives" on the application, or on the resume, never say "to make money". Instead, tell them what you will gain from working at their company as well as what you will bring to their company.

If you are asked to take an online or phone test, listen very carefully to all of the questions.

These tests are often similar to a psychological evaluation. Many times they will ask you the same questions, but from a different angle. You want to be truthful, and tell them what they want to hear. But at the same time, don't make yourself look too perfect!
